It only takes eight seconds for someone to become trapped in a flowing grain bin.

That's why it was so crucial for the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) to bring a "mobile safety grain entrapment demonstration unit" from Iowa to Ag Days and FarmTech this year. Glen Blahey, a safety specialist at CASA and Garth McIntyre, a rural rescue worker, rescued a mannequin from the flowing grain bin during the demonstration.

Blahey and McIntyre were able to free the mannequin by building a "coffer dam" with four 27-pound metal pieces. A drill-powered auger was then used to pump out the grain surrounding the mannequin and free it.

In lieu of giving speaker gifts at the 2017 CAAR Conference, CAAR made donations in each of the speakers' names to CASA's BeGrainSafe Program.
