Statistics Canada released results from the July Farm Survey of crop production, which shows a forecast similar to trade expectations – with durum being the only notable exception.

Durum production at 3.898 million tonnes is down by nearly 50 per cent from last year’s crop. It’s also below the range of trader’s expectations at 4.2 million to 5.4 million.

At 18.203, the canola forecast is down 7.1 per cent from last year. Statistics Canada revised a production number from last year’s crop – it now indicates that the 2016 canola crop was 19.601 million tonnes, up more than a million tonnes from the previous official estimate.

This chart from Statistics Canada shows the forecast compared to industry expectations and last year's production. Figures are in million tonnes.

Soybean production is up from last year by nearly 20 per cent to 7.743 million tonnes. Oats are also up – climbing 15 per cent to 3.685 million tonnes.

These estimates are taken from the July Farm Survey of crop production, which was conducted from July 19 to Aug. 1, 2017 and covered around 13,300 Canadian farms.
