CAAR has been actively working with retailer members and Fertilizer Canada seeking a resolution to the concerns brought forward to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Transport Canada regarding changes published in the 2014 version of the B620 and B622 standards.

The B620 and B622 Standards outline the design, construction, inspection, testing and maintenance of Transport Canada portable tanks, which includes nurse tanks or applicator tanks used for anhydrous ammonia.

The two primary concerns related to changes in the standard for construction of new anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks, and increased frequency of pressure testing and visual inspection for nurse tanks.

On January 17, 2017, CAAR alongside Fertilizer Canada and several member companies presented these concerns to CSA and Transport Canada. The CSA B620 Technical Committee has since established two working groups to further discuss these issues, which CAAR is a part of. If a resolution is achieved at the working group level and passed by the Technical Committee, the changes will be included in the next version of the B620 and B622 standards in 2018. CAAR and Fertilizer Canada are working closely with Transport Canada and the working groups to also find an interim solution that will apply to the 2014 standards when they are adopted into the regulations by Transport Canada, which is expected to happen this spring.
