The University of Saskatchewan’s (USask) College of Agriculture and Bioresources has received a significant boost of $25 million from the federal and provincial governments. This investment supports 15 strategic research chairs to advance key areas in agriculture.

Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, emphasized the importance of research in strengthening the agriculture sector’s resilience and growth.

The funding, part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, is provided through the Strategic Research Program to enhance crop genetic improvement, livestock development, food and bioproducts research, and soil and environmental studies.

Saskatchewan’s Minister of Agriculture, David Marit, highlighted the province’s commitment to evidence-based research, which benefits the agriculture sector. Stable funding attracts and retains top scientists, enhancing competitiveness and resilience.

Dr. Angela Bedard-Haughn, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Bioresources, expressed confidence that this investment will lead to innovative solutions that meet farmers’, industry’s, and consumers’ needs.

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year $3.5 billion initiative, supports Canada’s agri-food and agriproducts sectors. It includes $1 billion in federal programs and a cost-shared $2.5 billion for provincial and territorial initiatives.

This investment underscores the significance of research in driving the success and sustainability of Saskatchewan’s agriculture.  These USask research projects are advancing solutions crucial for the sector’s growth and environmental stewardship.
