OCTOBER 2024 23 SCIENCE OF THE SIX-PACK Whether it’s abs or beer, people are intrigued by the intrinsic nature of the six-pack. In this case, CAAR is pleased to bring to its annual convention a fun and engaging little event called The Science of the Six-Pack. As the kick-off event for the 2024 CAAR Connect Convention, the event has been designed to promote six (hence the six-pack moniker) local Saskatchewan breweries and their use of local ingredients via taste test to name a winner. The concept of the event is the brainchild of Terry Andryo, back when he worked for ATB Financial, a banking company that began in 1938 to help the people of Alberta through difficult economic times. It’s now the largest Alberta-based financial institution, with assets of $62.0 billion. Although now retired, Andryo keeps his finger on the Canadian agricultural pulse. He’s excited to introduce The Science of the Six-Pack event at the CAAR Convention, melding Saskatchewan breweries and retailers with the farmers who help supply their ingredients to make their craft beers. This beer-tasting competition is a contest, with the winning beer’s brewery having the honour to take home “Berta,” a large aluminium iconized beer keg—akin to Lord Stanley’s Cup (in homage only)—that it awards to the brewery deemed to have the IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE Getting together to crown a local craft beer winner is merely the tip of the iceberg. At The Science of the Six-Pack event, it’s all about learning about the interrelationships found along the value chain. Andrew Joseph, Editor (From left) Terry Andryo, facilitator of The Science of the Six-Pack event, Don Tse, and Sondra Baker pre-sampled a bevy of local beers before selecting six special brews for the CAAR audience.
