CAAR | October 2024

28 CAAR COMMUNICATOR NURSE TANK and trainers must be approved and registered with Transport Canada. This eliminates much of the uncertainty and confusion around this important issue. CAAR was the first approved training organization whose training program and credentials were reviewed and approved by Transport Canada in Ottawa under the new CSA B62020 standard. CAAR also has available the services of an approved and registered trainer to deliver the NTSCC training program. The CAAR Nurse Tank Safety Program provides an expanded two-day course, with the second day being devoted to hands-on hydrostatic testing, leak testing, and annual visual inspections to get you well on your experiential requirement to meet the minimum number of tests and inspections required to meet the standard. At the moment, the most stringent requirement in CSA B620 is that trainees must perform six hydrostatic tests under the direct supervision of a qualified tester to become a qualified tank tester, and 30 external visual inspections under direct supervision to become a qualified tank inspector. Existing Approved Testers and Inspectors CSA B620-20 stipulates that tank inspectors’ and tank testers’ training certificates obtained under the 2014 version of B620 would expire three years after the adoption of the 2020 version of CSA B620 coming into force. Transport Canada adopted the 2020 version of CSA B620 as of November 19, 2020, when CSA published the new standard. Regulations have recently changed regarding recertification for B620 (Nurse Tank) inspections. Certified Nurse Tank Inspectors are no longer able to take self-led courses for recertification and must complete the one-day recertification course in a classroom setting with a qualified instructor. CAAR has been approved to deliver training for recertification via Microsoft Teams training sessions. CAAR conducted three recertification sessions in the summer of 2024, with 30 individuals completing their recertification. Training in Brandon and Shoal Lake In September, 21 individuals representing ag retailers across Manitoba and Saskatchewan gathered in Shoal Lake, Manitoba, for CAAR’s in-person NTSP training under the instruction of Glenn Dickson of Northern Sky APC Solutions. The first day of the training consisted of classroom learning in Brandon, Manitoba, and the second day brought the participants to Shur-Gro in Shoal Lake for the handson portion of the training. During the training session, 12 tanks received their annual visual and leak inspection while six tanks were hydrostatically tested. Thank you to Wes Arnfinson and the Shur-Gro Shoal Lake team for allowing CAAR to use its facility for the training, and thank you to all of the volunteers. The second day of CAAR’s Nurse Tank Safety Program course involves a hands-on learning experience for attendees. Glenn Dickson photo
