In its current formulation, the “nanofertilizer” technology comprises a DNA aptamer that specifically binds to serine in canola root exudates so that nitrogen is released only in response to the serine production. However, other formulations can be developed comprising DNA aptamers that can selectively bind to any target molecule from any crop.
Advantages of the system may include one or more of improved nitrogen use efficiency by the plant, improved crop productivity, and/or reduced leaching of fertilizer from the soil.
