As CAAR members know, the success of Canadian pulses in international markets hinges on our adherence to the varied pesticide Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) set by over 130 countries we export to.
These MRLs often differ from those in Canada, necessitating strict compliance to avoid trade disruptions.
The pesticide glufosinate-ammonium is particularly problematic. Although registered for use in Western Canada on lentils with specific products, its application on any pulse crops is illegal due to very low or absent MRLs in many export destinations. This poses a significant risk of trade disruptions due to non-compliance.
Keep it Clean is a crucial initiative that equips Canadian pulse growers and their advisors with the necessary tools and resources to understand these risks and ensure their crops are market ready.
By providing up-to-date information on acceptable pesticide use and compliance, the initiative helps protect our pulse industry’s reputation and market access.
Growers and their advisors are reminded to always adhere to the product label guidelines for application rates, timing, and pre-harvest intervals. For further guidance on maintaining market access and using pesticides safely, visit the Keep it Clean website.
As the pulse industry continues to navigate the complexities of global trade, understanding and compliance with international pesticide regulations remain key to preserving market access and continuing our export success.
