CAAR is reminding retailers that the Environmental Emergency Regulations, 2019 have come into effect as of Saturday, August 24, 2019. Please continue reading for important information.

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the updated regulations, please take a moment now to read the technical bulletin prepared by Fertilizer Canada for guidance on the major changes coming into effect tomorrow.

In general, changes have been made to the following key areas of the Regulations:

  • Consolidation and modification of Schedule 1
  • Conditions for notice of substance at a facility and development of an environmental emergency plan
  • Frequency of environmental emergency plan simulation exercises
  • Requirements for communication to the public
  • Requirements for periodic submission of notices

This technical bulletin provides targeted guidance but is not a comprehensive list. It is recommended that facilities which are storing regulated substances consult the Regulations directly to confirm compliance obligations.
