In mid-August, the Wheat Growers Association (WG) launched a young farmer mentorship program to encourage young farmers to get informed and involved with agriculture policy.

According to the media release, the mentorship program was launched with the support of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Rail (CPKC).

“This is a great opportunity for young farmers to learn the effects different policies (transportation, trade, environment, etc.) have on their farm,” stated Kaitlyn Kitzan, SK Director and Treasurer.

The program will help young farmers connect with seasoned experts in the industry who will guide them through the ins and outs of successful grain farming, gain firsthand insights, practical knowledge, and personalized advice. The program will also help young farmers dive into the world of agricultural policy-making and advocacy; understand the regulatory landscape, explore policy discussions, and contribute their voice to shape the future of agriculture. The program aims to help young farmers get a firsthand look at the political process by participating in lobby experiences within their province.

Applications are open until November 1st, 2023 and the successful candidates will be announced November 15th.

The media release indicates that initially, the WG will support two young farmers from Western Canada: the Peace River District of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. To apply interested parties must be grain farmers within Western Canada and under the age of 35.
