The Census of Agriculture, held every five years, is taking place again in 2016 – and Canadian agri-retailers can play an important part in ensuring its success.

The Census gives Canadian farm operators the chance to engage in a national dialogue. It is the definitive source of community-level data in Canadian agriculture, and the results are widely used in the formulation of policy requests, communication and outreach work and conducting market research. The data gathered will help decision makers to be sure they are acting in the interests of farmers and agricultural operations across Canada, and will be an invaluable source of information for agri-retailers nationwide.

Agri-retailers can contribute to the success of the 2016 Census of Agriculture by encouraging their customers, neighbours and family farms to look out for, and complete, the Census.

At the beginning of May, all farm operators will receive a letter with instructions on how to complete the questionnaire. It has been significantly streamlined compared to 2011 – on average, respondents should take approximately 30% less time to complete the Census. Farm operators are legally required to complete the Census, under the Statistics Act.

On average, respondents should take approximately 30% less time to complete the Census.

A preview of the questionnaire can be found on the Canada Gazette website. By law, Statistics Canada is required to keep private the information provided in the Census questionnaires.
